6 Reasons To Book Your Holiday With Talalla Surf & Yoga

If you are looking for a rejuvenating week soaking up the best of what stunning Southern Sri Lanka has to offer, look no further than Talalla Surf & Yoga Retreat.

Talalla is an eco resort settled on a quiet white sandy beach, where the palm jungle meets the calm turquoise water. I hosted a yoga retreat at Talalla in February, and we had an incredible experience.

Every morning we woke up to the faint sounds of monkeys in the jungle, and fell asleep to crashing waves in the Indian Ocean just steps away. My group and I had an amazing week and it was in large part thanks to the hospitality at Talalla!

There’s Options For Everyone

Our group stayed in the luxury seaview villas, and it was an awesome experience to be able to see the ocean from my bed all week.

Talalla also offers bamboo huts, which is their “glamping” accommodation and looked awesome, deluxe suites both on ground level and up in the tree canopies, private rooms in a community bungalow, and a mixed dorm, which can have you living the oceanfront life for as little as $28 / night.

I led a yoga retreat with Talalla, so I was obviously excited about their 3 open-air yoga shalas. We practiced in all of them throughout the week with our various workshops and classes, but there is so much more than just yoga to keep you moving here.

Talalla offers vinyasa and yin / restorative type classes daily, pilates, and even boxilates, as well as an entire surf program with professional coaches from around the world.

The teachers as well as the programming and accommodation options make it a fun environment for those looking for a social component to the retreat experience.

Talalla was in the process of being built when the devastating tsunami hit in 2004. The Australian founder, Laurie, and her team responded with immediate aid in fundraising, supplies, and childcare support. Since the inception of the retreat, Talalla has been deeply connected to the people and nearby village and has worked hard to ensure a positive impact on the local economy and environment. They continue to employ and source locally whenever possible as well.

The Food

The restaurant at Talalla is a-mazing! Fresh juices and smoothies, delicious vegan options, buffet style lunches and dinners with all the curries, pastas, and local salads and mains you could dream of. The best part is it is all locally sourced and prepared seasonally.

The Spa

The Ayurvedic spa at Talalla is world class. I indulged in the Papaya Honey Facial. The treatment was amazing, and I especially enjoyed the walk back down the hill afterward, as I felt like everyone I saw knew I was coming from a facial and my skin was glowing. It was great. They also have body scrubs and wraps available, Swedish & Ayurvedic massage, and the traditional Shirodhara treatment.

The Location

The beach at Talalla is tucked away from the more chaotic areas a little further west, and close enough to all of the activities and sights to see to be your home base. The beach is a mile long and wraps around the very southern end of the island, so you can catch sunrise and sunset over the ocean! As mentioned above, the beach is pristine and quiet. You truly do not want to miss this social, beautiful hidden gem!
