Best Vegan Eats In Kauai

Maintaining a vegan diet while traveling in Kauai was a breeze. And it was delicious. Although many traditional Hawaiian dishes center around pig and fish, there’s also an abundance of tropical fruits, fresh veggies, and recipes made from the unique starchy ingredient I loved… poi, which is made out of the taro root.

I found the vegan scene to be pretty evolved, especially in Kapaʻa and along the hip towns of the north shore. There’s healthy cafes, juice bars and natural grocers all along the main highway, making it all too easy to stay well fed. I was traveling solo, so mostly I was after quick, healthy, affordable and satisfying.

Here’s my best recommendations!

In Hanalei…

The Hanalei Center is spread out over a few old repurposed buildings and has numerous restaurants, boutiques & gear shops. I ended up eating most of my meals around here as my accommodation was nearby and there were almost too many options for my 5-day stay!

Aloha Juice Bar. Grab a fresh coconut and acai, or veggie juice and homemade snacks out of an adorable tiny food truck in the heart of town.

Federico’s Fresh Mex. Surprisingly they have 5 vegan dishes. I got burrito & it was fire!

Hanalei Bread Company. A health conscious option with yummy coffee drinks. I got the hummus wrap and was loving their cold espresso to toss in my fresh cold coconut.

Postcards Cafe. A vegan-friendly restaurant designed out of a converted old house, which makes for a cute atmosphere. Their dishes are bright and colorful!

Be sure to check out Hanalei’s Saturday morning farmer’s market to stock up on delicious tropical fruits & meet local artists and makers.

The real hidden gems on this island are the natural grocers with smoothie, snack & salad bars that make Whole Foods Look Ghetto.

Hanalei Harvest Market is the go to on the north shore.

In Kilauea…

Trilogy Coffee. From raw vegan treats and pastries to savory grab & go options, this place has the plant-based magic all figured out. Their macadamia nut latte and energy balls were a lifesaver one mid-afternoon.

Kauai Juice Co. Pretty much right next door to Trilogy is a Kauai Juice Co, which I would say is easily the most popular of many juice joints on the island, and with good reason. Their nut milks and juice blends are to die for, their stores are insanely cute, and they offer a reward program for recycling the containers you get from them. Like many people, I’m obsessed with this place.

In Kapaʻa…

Mermaid Cafe. A cute walk up joint with veggie options in the center of Kapaʻa. You can’t miss it, and their outdoor seating is great for taking in the vibe of the area. (+ there’s another Kauai Juice Co around the corner 🤤).

Eat Healthy Cafe. This place calls itself vegan casual, which is my kinda restaurant! They’re BYOB and offer live music and garden seating.

The Kitchen at Papaya Natural Foods. You can’t go wrong grabbing a bite here with their huge soup & salad bar, homemade smoothies and handhelds, and all sorts of natural snacks.

Pro tip: Remember to bring your own utensils so you’re not having to rely on single use plastic!
